Tricky Stewart, who is arguably one of the hottest producers in the game, recently sat down with Kyra Kyles of Red Eye to discuss how he got his nickname, how his Chicago roots has influenced his sound, fatherhood, being a more ‘behind the scenes’ producer, and his big break.
What do you think distinguishes you from other producers? How do your Chicago roots play a part?
My work is all based on coming from Chicago with such great R&B roots. Even when I make pop, it’s got a strong R&B sound. I do it even when working with Katy Perry. Katy Perry’s sound is unique to her genre, but I add my own flair.
As a producer, do you ever feel slighted that you are more behind-the-scenes … that you make this music and these artists are the face of it?
I don’t, but it all depends on what other producers are doing it for if they ever feel that way. I like music. Getting in front of a camera is emotionally expensive. You risk the ridicule, the criticism that comes when you do that and open your life to the world. I’d rather be behind the scenes, but famous in hotels and restaurants.
